When it comes to your safety, your mask choice matters

The “4 Fs” of selecting the right mask:

  1. Filtration (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency): (BFE) is a measure of the ability of the mask’s material to prevent the passage of aerosolized bacteria, including sub-micron particulates filtration efficiency. BFE is expressed in the percentage of a known quantity that does not pass the mask material at a given aerosol flow rate.

  2. Fluid resistance: is the ability of the mask’s material to resist the penetration of blood and body fluids. When at risk of encountering blood and/or bodily fluid splatter, wear the recommended ASTM Level 3 fluid-resistant mask for the highest level of protection.

  3. Features: include loops or ties — masks with ear loops are not recommended for the OR. Anti-fog film, foam and tapes reduce distractions from fogging issues. Shields keep eyes clear of blood and splash.

  4. Fit: If not worn correctly, even the right mask could put you at risk. Nose and mouth must be covered completely. Create a seal around the face to prevent gaps that increase the risk of inhalation exposure.
